Folks-
I've got a little list of flagging maxims here. Its a draft to be sure,
suggestions and simplifications appreciated.

1: flag high
If your arms are not over you head while you tie the flagging on, your
flagging will not be easily seen.

2: flag permanent things.
Don't flag grass or other annuals, if possible avoid flagging dead sticks
that will fall eventually

3: flag in such a way the the route can be seen both ways.
check from both approaches that the flag can bee seen and used. this will
help keep the flagging to a minimum while maximizing the usefulness.

3: Only flag when the route is ambiguous.
Occasional flagging when needed matches the wilderness ethic.

4: If you disambiguate the route with tools and work, remove the flagging.
If the flagging is redundant it should be removed.

5: Don't remove flagging on trails that are ambiguous or could become
ambiguous. (for example in areas with annual grasses)
One lost person will cause a search and rescue team to violate the
wilderness ethic is a myriad of ways more noticeable that a bit of orange
tape.
